Carlton Centre Directions
Carlton Centre is at 150 Commissioner Street, Marshalltown, in the Johannesburg CBD, next to Gandhi Square. Here is how to get there by car, bus, Rea Vaya, minibus taxi or ride-hailing.

Where Carlton Centre is located
The complex fills the city block between Commissioner Street to the north and Main Street to the south, in Marshalltown on the eastern side of the CBD grid. Kruis Street runs along its western side and Von Wielligh Street along the east, with pedestrianised Fox and Smal Streets passing through and under the complex. Gandhi Square is a short walk to the west.
Shop addresses vary by brand. Most use 150 Commissioner Street, some use the corner of Commissioner and Kruis Streets, and Shoprite uses the Main Street side.
Driving directions
The neighbouring Gandhi Square precinct recommends reaching the area via the M1/M2 motorways and the Rissik Street off-ramp, or the Anderson Street off-ramp:
- From Pretoria / Sandton: N1 → M1 south → exit 10A onto the M2 → Rissik Street exit.
- From Soweto: M1 → exit 10 → M2 → Rissik Street exit.
- From Ekurhuleni: N12 → N3 → M2 → Heidelberg Road (M31) → Anderson Street (R29).
- From Braamfontein: Nelson Mandela Bridge → south on Ntemi Piliso Street → left into Marshall Street.

Public transport and ride-hailing
- Rea Vaya: Carlton Centre has two stations, Carlton Westbound on Commissioner Street and Carlton Eastbound one block north on Albertina Sisulu Road. Rea Vaya lists Carlton Centre as a free 15-minute transfer station. OpenStreetMap tags the stations for routes T1, C1 and C3, but check Rea Vaya’s current route map before you travel.
- Metrobus: Gandhi Square, next to the centre, is Joburg Metrobus’s main CBD terminus, served by many routes.
- From Park Station / Gautrain: journey planners estimate about 2 km on foot, or a short Rea Vaya ride (C3 inner-city route) towards Carlton.
- Minibus taxis: the CBD’s main ranks include Noord (MTN) Taxi Rank on Plein Street near Park Station and the Bree Street / Metro Mall rank on the west side. Ask marshals for a taxi heading towards Commissioner Street or Gandhi Square.
- Ride-hailing: set your pick-up or drop-off to “Carlton Centre, 150 Commissioner Street” and agree the exact corner with your driver.
The City Sightseeing Red Bus no longer lists Carlton Centre on its current Johannesburg route map, although an older stop page is still online.
Parking and entrances
Carlton Centre was built with a parkade for about 2,000 cars. Parking directories list a multi-storey, height-restricted, pay-on-foot car park with access from Main Street, Marshall Street and Kruis Street (entry only), open 06:00–22:00. Management hasn’t published current rates or hours, so treat these as unconfirmed. More detail is on Carlton Centre parking.
Landmarks near Carlton Centre
- Gandhi Square: public square and Metrobus terminus, next to the centre.
- Main Street precinct / Mining District: the pedestrianised Main Street runs along the south side.

Safety: official travel advice for Johannesburg warns about muggings and bag-snatching and advises not to walk around after dark, not to display valuables, and to refuse help from strangers at ATMs. Visit during trading hours and keep phones out of sight on the street.
