Owner and office tenant

Transnet Carlton Centre

Transnet has owned Carlton Centre since 1999 and ran its head office there for almost two decades. Today its group head office is at 96 Rissik Street, and Carlton Centre is up for sale. Here is what Transnet still has at the centre.

Not Transnet’s head office: Transnet’s official contact page gives its group head office as 96 Rissik Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg, not Carlton Centre.

Overview

Transnet, South Africa’s state-owned freight, ports and pipelines company, bought Carlton Centre from Anglo American in 1999 for about R33 million and used the tower as its group head office from around 2000. In 2018 about 1,440 staff moved out to Midrand for a planned revamp that did not happen. Transnet later restored the heritage building at 96 Rissik Street as its new head office (work reported complete in September 2025).
